Horsehair crab “ke-gani” from Abashiri is popular among both local residents and tourists. Horsehair crab grown in the Sea of Okhotsk covered with ice floe during winter is firm and sweet. kani miso is rich and delicious.
Snow crab “zuwai-gani” is said to have an elegant and light taste. It is often used in crab pot dishes, so it is viewed as a “winter food.” However, it can be eaten from spring to early summer in Abashiri.
The golden king crab “Ibara-gani” produced in Japan is rare and is called “Phantom crab ” because it is not widely distributed in the market. Its taste is as good as that of the red king crab.
Red king crab “taraba-gani” and blue king crab “Abura-gani” are called the kings of crab. Both red king crab and blue king crab are caught mainly from around summer. Red king crab is caught outside Hokkaido, while most blue king crab is caught off the coast of Abashiri. Red king crab and blue king crab are similar in appearance. The common way to distinguish them is the number of protrusions in the center of the shell. The red king crab has six and the blue king crab has four . Also, the blue king crab is characterized by its whitish soles and long fingernails. The thick red king crab and blue king crab from Abashiri are called king crabs, and their sweetness and fragrance is among the best in the world.
Abashiri is one of the best places in Japan for catching salmon. The salmon grown in Abashiri migrate through the Sea of Okhotsk, which is rich in nutrients. It is fatty and firm. The meat is processed into fillets, Aramaki preserved, Yamazuke preserved and salmon jerky. The roe is processed into salmon roe and salted salmon roe. You can enjoy it with various dishes such as grilled fish, chanchan yaki and salmon roe donburi.
* In October 2014, Hokkaido approved that the Abashiri Fisheries Cooperative Association’s fish-landing system complies with the EU sanitary management standards. As a result, Abashiri salmon processed at EU-HACCP certified facilities in the city has been exported to the EU. (This is the first time in Japan since 1995.)
When winter comes, the Sea of Okhotsk and Notoroko Lake are closed by ice. However, it becomes a more nutritious environment due to the plankton-rich drift ice and so on. The scallops from Abashiri grown in a nutritious environment are slightly sweet and have an excellent texture. They are perfect for various dishes such as sashimi, grilled with butter or fried.
* In October 2013, the area off the coast of Abashiri-City was certified by the EU as the “Sea Area for Producing Scallops for Export to the EU”. As a result, “Abashiri Scallops” processed at the “EU-HACCP Certified Facilities” in the city were exported to the EU.
Finest Seafood From Abashiri
The sea urchins mainly caught in Abashiri are a species called short-spined sea urchin. It is characterized by its vivid color and rich taste.
Dried fish such as Atka mackerel, channel rockfish, flounder and herring are one of the typical tastes of Abashiri. Please enjoy the dried fish with a condensed flavor. It is also perfect as a souvenir.
Roe of salmons and pink salmons is a gem of the sea that contains plenty of nutrients from the Sea of Okhotsk. Roe pickled in salt is called salted salmon roe, and the egg sacs are removed from the salted salmon roe and seasoned with salt and soy sauce is called Ikura.
Abashiri is the birthplace of frozen ground fish “surimi”. The main ingredient is fresh walleye pollock, and various flavorful kamaboko (Deep-fried Kamaboko, grilled kamaboko, boiled kamaboko and chikuwa) are made. Kamaboko is one of the soul foods of the people of Abashiri-City.
The catch of freshwater clam in Abashiri is the largest in Hokkaido. It accounts for more than 80% of the total catch in Hokkaido every year. The fishing season is from May to October in Abashiriko Lake, and mainly in winter in Mokotoko Lake and Tofutsuko Lake. The freshwater clam in Abashiri, which is very meaty, is perfect as an ingredient for miso soup or as a gift.
The catch of whitebait and pond smelt in Abashiri is the largest in Hokkaido. whitebait is in season in autumn and pond smelt is in season in winter. Both are seasonal fish representing Abashiri.
