Only an hour’s drive from central Sapporo, visitors can enjoy the magnificent autumn leaves along the valley in fall. Jozankei is the valley of the Toyohira River, which has its headwaters behind the Toyohirakyo Dam. This river is the mother river flowing through the center of Sapporo. Jozankei was discovered by the priests of Higashi Honganji Temple when they manually excavated the road over the Nakayama Pass (Honganji Road) from present-day Date City to Sapporo City for the development of Hokkaido.
