The mountainous area of 10 mountains over 2,000 meters tall has been designated as a special natural monument of the country (natural conservation area). Many animals, and plants inhabit the area and can be seen up close.
There are 14 hot spring resorts including Sounkyo Onsen, Tenninkyouonsen, and Lake Shikaribetsu hot spring in the neighborhood and is famous in winter again as a skiing area.
